When Allies Turn Tides

Immediately following the events of World War II, the world we as United States citizens once knew unfortunately was not at total peace. President Harry S. Truman was elected to serve as America's leader and held the tough decision to drop both Atomic Bombs on Japan. Because of this major historical event, countries began to compete basically for the right of who had the greatest amount of military firepower while also grabbing revenge from getting the raw end of the deal after World War II. The Soviet Union was the main competitor with the U.S. in attempting to create weapons of mass destruction. While America desired to keep the information secret on the creation of nuclear warfare, many spies aroused during this time period to steal the information. However, America would basically be destroying themselves if we had decided to use nuclear weapons to stop the Soviet Union in this so-called "competition" mainly because the Soviets would be ticked to fight back. This stillness became known as the Cold War.

Adding to the controversy, the Soviet Union is attempting to develop a Communist rule within their Government. In order to make this happen, the Soviets needed a few allies to support and create a lebensraum of Communist rule westward beyond European countries. This theory became known as the Iron Curtain, where Joseph Stalin (Soviet leader) would spread Communism in West European countries and eventually, around the world. President Truman strived to prevent the spread of Communism from ever happening. Thus, he created a new foreign policy for the United States, Containment. After the events of World War II, Germany was divided into four zones, each controlled by a different European nation, including the United States. Germany became a split nation after a fight with Communism and as an effect, the Berlin Wall was set up splitting East and West. Cut off from supply, our Americans were helpful in aiding West Berlin with supplies in what became known as the Berlin Airlift.

Meanwhile, the Communism spread continued in Asian countries. Following a brutal Civil War in China, two distinct parties were developed. Nationalist and Communist theories were spread from China into Northern and Southern Korea. Syngman Rhee became the Nationalist leader in South Korea, while Kim Il Sung favored Communism in North Korea. Sung eventually planned an attack on Nationalist South Korea, causing the United States to finally put Containment into action. When this war tide turned, not only were American soldiers thrust into operation, but we, as the Americans, began to change our views on Communism and the Cold War itself. Hollywood films started to support Communism and spies were even more more popular during this time period. The Cold War is essentially the start of an everlasting struggle against Europe, and decades of slow, costly decisions; Ultimately, this is the everlasting freeze!
